Su uso est\u00e1 principalmente asociado al riego de cultivos. En zonas donde el agua escasea, como la Mediterr\u00e1nea, las aguas residuales tratadas pueden constituir una fuente alternativa de agua de riego que permitir\u00eda reducir su uso y aumentar la eficiencia en su gesti\u00f3n. Los lixiviados producidos en viveros representan una fuente potencial de contaminaci\u00f3n difusa, que puede afectar aguas subterr\u00e1neas, r\u00edos y zonas marinas costeras. Durante los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, el uso de fertilizantes agr\u00edcolas, ricos en nitratos, han representado una fuente de contaminaci\u00f3n muy importante de las masas de agua. A d\u00eda de hoy, se estima que la agricultura es la fuente del 50% de las entradas de nitr\u00f3geno en aguas superficiales.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El proyecto Cleanleach nace con el objetivo de prevenir y reducir el impacto medioambiental asociado a los lixiviados derivados de viveros hort\u00edcolas para mejorar la gesti\u00f3n del agua agr\u00edcola. El proyecto Cleanleach pretende desarrollar una laguna de inundaci\u00f3n que combine flujo sub-superficial horizontal con filtros de arena y hel\u00f3fitos para reducir las cargas de nitratos de estos lixiviados.
