La aridez del clima Mediterr\u00e1neo y la demanda de agua desde los n\u00facleos urbanos se acentuar\u00e1n en el futuro, con lo cual el escenario ser\u00e1 el de r\u00edos con caudales m\u00e1s bajos y con menor capacidad de diluci\u00f3n, esto es, m\u00e1s vulnerables al exceso de nutrientes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los ecosistemas fluviales son capaces de transformar y retener nutrientes disueltos en el agua y por tanto, son de vital importancia tanto desde el punto de vista ecol\u00f3gico, ambiental, como social. Los r\u00edos urbanos son \u201cpuntos calientes\u201d de nitrificaci\u00f3n, esto es la transformaci\u00f3n microbiana de amonio a nitrato. Sin embargo, la acumulaci\u00f3n de nitr\u00f3geno (N) en forma de biomasa o la eliminaci\u00f3n permanente de N via desnitrificaci\u00f3n no resultan tan evidentes, lo que cuestiona la capacidad de \u201cautodepuraci\u00f3n\u201d de estos r\u00edos. Est\u00e1 la biota saturada de N? La escala de observaci\u00f3n es la conveniente? La restauraci\u00f3n de r\u00edos urbanos podr\u00eda contribuir a incrementar su capacidad de retener N?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El proyecto NiCUS pretende explorar aspectos esenciales de la biogeoqu\u00edmica fluvial poco estudiados, especialmente en r\u00edos urbanos. Por un lado, sabemos poco sobre c\u00f3mo las oscilaciones diarias de ox\u00edgeno afectan al ciclo del N, a pesar que dos procesos clave, la nitrificaci\u00f3n y la desnitrificaci\u00f3n, dependen directamente de la concentraci\u00f3n de ox\u00edgeno en el agua. Adem\u00e1s, NiCUS plantea estudiar la eficiencia de retenci\u00f3n de N de distintos substratos tanto naturales como derivados de la bioingenier\u00eda (i.e. fiber rolls vegetados usados para estabilizar los m\u00e1rgenes fluviales).
