Este proceso, llamado nitrificaci\u00f3n, es clave en el ciclo del nitr\u00f3geno en los r\u00edos, y puede ser especialmente relevante en aquellos que reciben los efluentes de EDAR ya que no solo contribuyen a reducir las cargas de NH<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">+<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, potencialmente t\u00f3xicas, sino que el NO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> producido puede ser eliminado del ecosistema v\u00eda desnitrificaci\u00f3n.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Los efluentes de EDAR adem\u00e1s, inoculan en el r\u00edo receptor bacterias y arqueas nitrificantes (AOB y AOA, respectivamente) que tienen la capacidad de colonizar los sustratos del lecho del r\u00edo. All\u00ed, los AOB y AOA forman parte de las comunidades microbianas (biofilms) que se desarrollan tanto en los cantos rodados (biofilm epil\u00edtico) como en los sedimentos (biofilm epis\u00e1mico). Ahora bien, la abundancia relativa de los AOA y AOB difiere entre los dos tipos de biofilms ya que estos microorganismos tienen ecofisiolog\u00edas muy diferentes. Por tanto, ser\u00eda de esperar que existan diferencias entre los sustratos del cauce del r\u00edo fluvial tanto en su capacidad de nitrificaci\u00f3n como en su contribuci\u00f3n relativa a la nitrificaci\u00f3n a nivel de tramo.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El proyecto NITRISED pretende explorar los factores y mecanismos que regulan la nitrificaci\u00f3n en r\u00edos receptores de efluentes de EDAR. El objetivo del proyecto NITRISED es examinar la capacidad de nitrificaci\u00f3n de los AOA y AOB presentes en el biofilm epil\u00edtico y epis\u00e1mico y estudiar c\u00f3mo estas actividades se ven afectadas por la presencia de hel\u00f3fitos.
